Ecocide: international Criminal Law and the case of the brazilian Amazon

This article explores ecocide as a proposed international criminal norm designed to protect and prevent harm to the global ecosystem. The analysis focuses on the historical process of environmental degradation in Brazil, with particular emphasis on the Amazon region. Methodologically, the research employs a historical-dialectical and interdisciplinary approach, drawing on International Criminal Law, green criminology, and studies on the socio-cultural formation of the Amazon. As well as empirical research on the number of individuals incarcerated for environmental crimes. The study aims to recover the intellectual trajectory of ideas advanced by international movements advocating for the recognition of ecocide and to evaluate the current stage of theoretical and practical debates surrounding its consolidation as a binding legal norm.
